Российское Дело / Russian Deal

YAHOO!! It’s official. THE GLIMPSE is going to be available in Russian!

I’m so excited about this. It is going to be published in Russia by EKSMO who also published Scott Westerfeld’s awesome ‘Uglies’ series and Lauren Oliver’s stunning debut ‘Before I Fall’, among others. As these two books are both favourites of mine, I feel like I’m in excellent company!

GABBY @ BOOKMARKS & BOOKSHELVES:

An astounding debut Claire Merle has Introduced a dystopian that is thought provoking and will leave you heart pounding way beyond the last page.

When fifteen-year-old Ana finds out there was a mistake with her test, her whole world crumbles. Now, seventeen, Joining with Pure-boy Jasper is her only hope of salvation.
But when Jasper disappears, Ana sets off on his trail, determined to solve the mystery of his abduction. In doing so she uncovers some devastating truths…

The society that Claire Merle has set was one that was beautifully disturbing. It made my heart pound and had me at the edge of my seat. When I wanted things to get better for the characters- they seemed to get worse! This story made me feel so many emotions and not a lot of YA book nowadays can do that.

WATCH THIS!

So the marketing/promo girls at Faber asked me to make a couple of videos for the awesome Glimpse facebook page — they know I like doing that!

I’m not sure that this is what they had in mind… But hopefuly it’ll make them laugh.

WARNING: This video is 49 seconds long. The time you spend watching it may not be refunded or exchanged.

Should revisions be scaring you senseless?

Well, are you a genius?

If your second answer is yes, then no, but if it’s no, then yes.

Probably, definitely, maybe.

In May 2011, I signed a 2-book deal for The Glimpse. When the infamous editorial letter arrived, (actually, I was lucky to have a short, 3-page letter and a face-to-face meeting), my editor highlighted a couple of ‘issues’ at the beginning and the end of the novel. Listening to her thoughts, I decided I didn’t want to do a patch up job. I wanted to totally rethink the two suggested zones. So I asked if she would be happy for me to rewrite these parts from scratch. She was.

70 sparkling new pages later there were changes which reverberated throughout the story; changes which required tweaking and adjusting everywhere; changes which scared and excited me in about equal measure. Was I nervous when I handed the edits in? Hell yes! I’d taken risks. I’d ‘gone’ places we hadn’t discussed at all. And I was relieved and ecstatic when my editor was ‘thrilled’ with the revisions.

The risk paid off.

Now I’m revising book 2. Book 2 is a very different experience. Because I’ve got under a year to write it and meanwhile, I have also got to fit in first book edits, (including copy edits and proof edits), and I know the book has been bought totally and solely on book 1, and what if they don’t like it at all?

Book 2 has to be handed in May 1st. In January,  I came out of the cupboard, closest, whatever, and asked an author friend for feedback on my rough draft.

When I got her notes, I panicked.

She put her finger on something I’d been kind of, sort of, maybe avoiding. And after a couple of days of lost sleep, I realised I would have to rewrite A LOT. Like almost everything.

The first 3 chapters could stay, the last 2 chapters would remain along the same lines, one or two from  the middle would make the cut, but the rest was in the bin. Did this scare me and then some? Oh yes. But now I’m coming to the end of the tunnel and I know I made the right decision.

Unless my editor hates it.

…I’ll let you know in May.

In the meantime, I say, take the risk.

If you’re curious about what it’s like to work on book 2, check out Candy Gourlay’s post : http://notesfromtheslushpile.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/what-i-learned-from-writing-my-second.html

The YA Scavenger Hunt is on!

Today is the YA Scavenger Hunt and I’m participating for the first time. Yeeha!

Don’t know what the Scavenger Hunt is? Go HERE and find out now. You’ve only got 72 hours to play and win some amazing prizes…

OK, so there are 3 teams, red, blue and yellow and each team has its own loop so that you can win a total of 20 books per loop. You can enter just 1 loop, 2, or all 3 — that’s 60 awesome books!

I’m team RED!

If you get lost or stuck at anytime go HERE.  Don’t forget, once you piece together all the clues to the hunt, make sure you fill out the form on the blog to officially qualify for the grand prize. Only entries that have the completed phrase will qualify.

Today for the hunt I am hosting Tara Fuller, author of Perigee Moon. We’re going to have an exclusive character interview in a moment, but first here’s a bit more about her:

Tara Fuller writes novels. Some about grim reapers. Some about witches. All of course are delightfully full of teen angst and kissing. Tara grew up in a one stop light town in Oklahoma where once upon a time she stayed up with a flash light reading RL Stine novles and only dreamed of becoming a writer. She has a slight obsession with music and a shameless addiction for zombie fiction, Mystery Science Theater, and black and white mochas. Tara no longer lives in a one stop light town. Now she lives with her family in a slightly larger town in North Carolina where they have at least three stoplights.

And the book…

After a horrific fire claims the life of her mother, seventeen year old Rowan Bliss finds herself in the miniscule town of Ipswich, Massachusetts. It’s here that she meets Alex, a deliciously mysterious boy who holds the key to unlocking her family’s dark secret.

As Rowan falls helplessly over the edge for Alex, the secrets that he insists on keeping refuse to be contained, and the truth that she uncovers challenges everything she has ever believed. Alex is a witch. And now he’s awakened something within her she never even knew existed. But out of all of this, the one thing Rowan won’t accept is the fact that Alex is destined to die.

Now Rowan must unearth the buried power she harbors within to escape a deadly prophecy, defy the very laws of time, and prevent the hands of fate from taking yet another person she loves.

Wow! How good does that sound!! You can buy Perigee Moon Here.

AND NOW TARA’S EXCLUSIVE CONTENT, AN INTERVIEW WITH ALEX FROM PERIGEE MOON.

Sorry! The YA Scavenger Hunt is over and this material has been deleted! ***

Intriguing! Guess I need to get my hands on a copy of Perigee Moon to find out more about Alex and Rowan!

Don’t forget, in this post you’ll need to pick up the secret letter which will help you unscramble the winning phrase to win The Red Team’s books and prizes. The secret letter is the ONLY letter in this post in RED.

And while you’re going through the hunt, do keep an eye out for my special content — the video I have posted won’t be officially released for another few weeks and is only online for the next 3 days.

Want another opportunity to win a rare, signed ARC of THE GLIMPSE?  I just received the first advanced copy today, (see blog post below) so parallel to the Scavenger Hunt prize, I’m giving away an additional signed, advanced copy. YA SCAVENGER HUNT

I’m so EXCITED!! Just found out I’m going to be taking part in the fantastic international YA Scavenger Hunt.Go and join the blog to keep updated and have a chance to win signed books by sixty YA authors!!! TEAM RED, TEAM RED!!

We’ve found Tamsin!

It’s official!! Director Andrea Kapos and myself have cast fifteen-year-old Pien Meulensteen to play the role of Tamsin Strike in The Glimpse video diaries. During the auditions, I was immediately captivated by Pien’s performance. She portrayed the character of Tamsin with an edgy charm that I found irresistible. I felt like I was seeing the Tamsin from my book come to life! I’m really excited we’ve found her for the video diaries. We saw lots of wonderful actresses but Pien really ‘felt’ like Tamsin. Will keep you posted on how the filming goes in a couple of weeks, and congratulations Pien!!
